New Policies for Academic Honors and Automated External Defibrillators

Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs) Policy
Our school policies continue to be updated and adjusted based as needed. The policy subcommittee, consisting of Arlene Hawkins, William Madden, and Loren Howard, brought forward two policies for review by the whole board.
The first, Policy EBBCA, concerns the use and location of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Locations of the AEDs are fairly straightforward – they will be placed in well-marked and safe locations that are also accessible in accordance with guidelines from the American Heart Association.
As for use, the policy recommends that, whenever possible, trained anticipated responders administer the AEDs when needed. These people will work with school nurses and administrators. Realizing, however, that time is of the essence in these situations and AEDs are designed to be used in emergency situations, the subcommittee has also recognized that any individual who needs to administer treatment can do so, provided it is done in good faith.
The other policy regarding AEDs was withdrawn.
Academic Honors
The other policy discussed clearly and officially defines academic honors, including graduation honors, transcript class rank, and the honor roll. The class Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be determined by their grade point average (GPA) and there will be no tie-breaker. In the event of tie, there will be Co-Valedictorians and/or Co-Salutatorians.
Similarly, Honor and High Honor will be awarded at graduation based on GPA. Any student who earns a GPA of at least 3.7, will be designated an Honor Graduate. If a student achieves a 3.9 GPA or higher and earns the highest credit diploma type will be designated a High Honor Graduate.
Class rank for the purpose of transcripts will be determined by GPA as well.
The Honor Roll program will have two levels. The levels will confer a designation of High Honors and Honors Roll. This is distinct from the graduation honors.
- A designation of High Honors will be awarded to students who earn no grades lower than an A- (89.5%) and a GPA above 3.5 in any given grading period.
- A designation of Honors will be awarded to students who earn no grades less than a B (83.5%) and a GPA between 3.0 and 3.99 in any given grading period.
